Quelle: vg247.comTHQ denies mass shelving rumour, highlights Q4 sales
Rumours of THQ’s demise have been greatly exaggerated, the publisher has maintained, flatly denying cancellations of its 2014 line-up.
“THQ has not cancelled its 2014 line-up, and has not made any decisions regarding the planned MMO,” THQ’s Australian PR arm wrote in a statement.
“As part of the ongoing review of our business, we have made decisions to ensure that the company is strategically addressing the most attractive markets. As we have previously announced, we have dramatically reduced our commitment to the kids’ boxed games sector which leads to a significantly more focused release schedule moving forward. Our slate for calendar 2012 and beyond is focused on high-quality core games and continues to build our digital platform and business. We are excited for our pipeline of original and high-quality content along with our relationships with some of the best talent in the industry.
“Additionally, we are thrilled with the great performance of Saints Row: The Third, which on a like for like period in North America has tripled in sell-through from Saints Row 2. In addition, WWE ’12’s worldwide sell-through sales are up almost 40% year-over-year for the same sales period with fewer platforms. According to NPD, for the month of December and the 2011 year, THQ was the #5 publisher overall, #4 third party, with reported sell through growing over 18% in a market that was down almost 6%. And coming up next, we have two great titles for the first half of the year including UFC Undisputed 3 and Darksiders 2.”
Troubling whispers
Over the weekend, IGDA mobile SIG head Kevin Dent rumoured on Twitter that THQ had dropped its entire 2014 line-up, including “the Game Workshops MMO,” Vigil’s Dark Millenium Online.
In addition, it’s being claimed the publisher is offering itself for sale to “Asian firms” in order to increase its value.
Dent added that “word is spreading that THQ has returned IP to Disney AFTER paying the advance, with no refund.”
The rumours built on growing concerns over THQ’s waning financial performance. Over the past year, the company closed five development teams, and made a number of staff cuts. Red Faction and MX vs ATV Alive were both shelved during 201 after disappointing sales. However, it also poured resources into a new studio in Montreal, headhunting top local talent.
THQ development teams were among the first to receive Wii U kits, and several launch titles were expected; it also holds the UFC and WWE licenses, and saw success – now waning – with its Wii tablet add-on, uDraw.
The publisher has five major studios and at least ten games in the works, including Darksiders 2 and Metro: Last Light scheduled for northern summer; a publishing deal for Obsidian’s South Park: The Game, Guillermo del Toro’s inSane trilogy, and Tomonobu Itagaki’s Devil’s Third, as well as the highly anticipated Dark Millenium Online.
GamesIndustry cites anonymous sources for word that the Vigil-developed MMORPG is for sale.
Value
THQ’s market capitalisation – the total dollar value of its publicly available shares – is $45.41 million. It is likely any offer to purchase the publisher would be much higher than that, resulting in a significant pay out to current investors – so expect interest in THQ stock to increase if a sale is on the cards.
At time of writing, THQ shares are on a slight rise at 67 cents in after hours trading. On Tuesday, THQ saw a spike to 80 cents per share – possibly on the back of insider rumours of a sale – but hit a 52 week low at 65 cents on Friday.
The company’s highest share price over the last year was $6.53 in early February 2011, but apart from a small bump in late October and early November, around the release of Saints Row: The Third, the company’s trade value has been on a steady decline in the 12 months since.

A job advertisement at Dead Rising 2 developer Capcom Game Studio Vancouver has revealed that the studio is working on an unannounced new IP.
The listing reveals that the studio, previously known as Blue Castle Games, currently has a "third-person action game" in development.
Meanwhile, a second job listing describes the studio as a "multi-project and multi-IP developer", with "two new AAA titles in the works".
Neither title has been officially announced by Capcom.
The studio was officially acquired by Capcom after the release of Dead Rising 2 in October 2010, with one of the games in development expected to be another title in the Dead Rising franchise.
During December, an update on the official Dead Rising Facebook page prompted speculation that Dead Rising 3 was in the works.
But when it comes to what Capcom Vancouver's new IP could be, your guess is as good as ours.
Capcom Game Studio Vancouver's most recent title, Dead Rising 2: Off The Record, released last October on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

Quelle: vg247.comUbisoft Toronto to announce new project soon
While still committed to Splinter Cell, Ubisoft Toronto wil unveil its first independent project soon.
“We are about to announce our first big triple-A being developed by the studio,” studio head Jade Raymond told CVG.
“I’ve got to say I think it’s going better than I could’ve imagined. I’m really amazed at the team we’ve put together and what we’ve been able to accomplish and I think Ubisoft is pretty excited too. Soon we’ll find out what everyone else thinks.”
Currently, Ubisoft Toronto is collaborating with the prolific Ubisoft Montreal on the next Splinter Cell game, and Raymond confirmed that this title still has priority.
“We’re not actually working on a big new IP yet within the studio, it’s one of the mandates and we’re definitely starting up some things in that direction, but we’re not working on a big new IP yet. Right now we’re 100% focussed on Splinter Cell,” she said.
The next entry in the Splinter Cell series is rumoured to be called Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Retribution, and is expected during 2013.

Quelle: vg247.comFrom Software confirms Dark Souls series to continue
Dark Souls technically isn’t a sequel to Demon’s Souls, but From Software doesn’t intend to call it quits on the fledgling quasi-series.
The versatile developer told GameTrailers it expects to produce more games of the same ilk.
“Of course, it’s not over yet,” R&D head Masanori Takeuchi said.
“You have to go back to our roots, which is King’s Field. We’ve made many games in that series. We’ve always been enamoured by dark fantasy action RPGs. That’s just been our core DNA and I think we’ll continue to utilize that.”
Demon’s Souls was itself considered a successor to the hardcore first-person dungeon crawlers released under the King’s Field banner.
We’ve always been about making games for the core gamer, and they weren’t necessarily games that did well financially, which is too bad,” executive producer Eiichi Nakajima added.
“The success of both Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls, which have each sold over a million [copies] per title worldwide, has made us shift our thinking internally to not just core gamers, but to globalize our products, that they can be successful on a worldwide scale. That’s now one of the key pillars we consider when we develop games in the future.”
As a part of this global expansion, the developer is looking at non-traditional platforms, judging whether mobile and tablet devices can support its particular development ethos.
“We know what butters our bread, obviously it’s consumer games. That’s where we see some of our key strengths,” Takeuchi reassured.
“That being said, as developers, we like to do new things and new challenges will help us mature and grow as a developer. Smart phones and tablets are an interesting challenge for us.
“If we do go down that path, it’s not going to be what you see on the market today, [which are] more watered down, less ‘core’ experiences. We like to make games for core gamers, so if we take that approach, it’s going to be a core experience on a tablet, something that gamers are going to love.”
Thanks, GameInformer.

Re: NEWS über Konsolen / Konsolenspiele etc.
Quelle: vg247.comAvalanche to announce new game at E3, isn’t Just Cause 3 or Renegade Ops 2
Avalanche boss Christofer Sundberg has confirmed the developer will show one of its new projects for the first time this year at E3.
Sundberg, however, confirmed to IGN the project in question wasn’t Just Cause 3 or Renegade Ops 2 – both IPs are owned by Square Enix and Sega respectively.
Rather, it’ll be a licensed title that isn’t from a movie.
“We aren’t particularly interested in movie-based games,” he said. “I think the whole industry destroyed that. So much money’s been pumped into those crappy games, it’s amazing. It’s really scary when you look at how bad they are.”
Sundberg wouldn’t say if the title unveil, one of two games coming from the studio next year, had anything to do with the long-rumoured title related to the new Max Max film that former God of War director Cory Barlog, now at Crystal Dynamics, was involved with.
But he did confirm the new game would run on a modified version of the Avalanche Engine that powered Just Cause 2.

Quelle: vg247.comUbisoft – Rainbow Six: Patriots hasn’t been derailed
Former creative director David Sears and senior Ubisoft Montreal staff have said a recent team shuffle hasn’t adversely affected Rainbow Six: Patriots’ development.
Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat told GameInformer that all the team members rumoured to be off the project wre had moved off the project, but that the game was still on track for a 2013 release with no major changes.
“We’re definitely going on with Rainbow, too, evolving the vision that came from David [Sears]‘s initial input,” he said.
Sears, who had served as creative director on Patriots, iss till at Ubisoft Montreal, working on “a major project for a major brand”.
“Another opportunity arose that was a really good fit, and I am more than delighted to contribute to that,” he said.
“To paraphrase Mark Twain, I’m not dead, and Rainbow is still very much alive. One of the things that’s really important for everyone to understand is senior management and the editorial group challenged me to create something plausible, relevant, and that touches on the current fears of the U.S. citizens to the point that I was almost surprised myself we were taking these creative risks.
“They are still behind it. I spent time working on it because I love it, but there comes a point where you give the vision to everybody and they embrace it and start telling me what the vision is now.”
Patriots is expected on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2013.

Quelle: gamasutra.com via gamerzines.comLucasArts developing a next-gen FPS?
A job ad posted online yesterday has suggested that LucasArts could be developing a first-person shooter for next-generation consoles.
The job ad, which is for a Senior Core Engineer, states that the candidate “will be the engine level specialist responsible for implementing cutting edge features and optimizations on current and Future Generation console and PC hardware,” adding that they’ll “provide technical expertise to develop high-performance game engine technology.”
The title of the ad reveals that the team is working on an “FPS Title”.
Previous job ads have already revealed that LucasArts is working on a next-generation title. However, this is the first time that an FPS has been suggested.
LucasArts hasn’t released a first-person shooter since 2005′s Star Wars: Republic Commando, a tactical shooter which launched to widespread critical acclaim.
Other first-person shooters developed by the firm include Star Wars: Dark Forces, Jedi Knight: Dark Forces, and Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast.
Could a Jedi Knight revival be on the cards?
